2010 Masters' North American Championships (Standard and Radial)

The 2010 Masters' North American Championships was held August 13-15 in Long Beach, Ca., hosted by the Alamitos Bay Yacht Club and featured fabulous sailing outside the Los Angeles Breakwater on the beautiful waters of the Catalina Channel. The 40 Standard and 20 Radial masters were treated to three days of sunshine and building seabreezes, providing a little something for everyone - 5-8 knots in the early races to a peak of almost 20 knots on Friday afternoon! In the Standard rigs, Kevin Taugher led wire-to-wire with only one hiccup (when he caught some kelp on his blades) to easily take the Apprentice and overall titles. Vann Wilson overcame the adversity of a broken lower section before the start of the penultimate race to take top Master, with Peter Vessella taking the top Grandmaster title. In the Radial fleet, apprentice Dave Leuck ran an impressive string of bullets to close out the regatta and take the title. 2010 Great Lakes Masters

2010 Laser Masters Great Lakes Championships
Hosted by Sarnia Yacht Club
There 4 races on Saturday with winds from 5 to 12 knots.  The weather mark ended up quite close to the beach which made for some challenging tactical situations.  Each start had the current (a bit over 1 kt) pushing everyone over so if you look in the Full Results links you will find some OCS scores.  On Sunday we were greated by fog and no wind so we waited ashore for an hour before getting towed out. Some nice wind filled in and we started a race but part way through it got weird so it was abandoned.  The wind shifted about 90 degrees, settled, and off we went again.  The wind stayed fairly steady throughout this race at about 5-6 kts.  The wind and current were almost the same direction which made for a very long beat and fairly quick run.  The race comittee tried to get another race off.  We started and about 20 minutes later only made it 1/2 way up the beat.  They were also monitoring weather and some nasty front was approaching so they thought it best to ttow us in.  We got heavy rain while putting away the boats but nothing too bad.  Later that day we heard about a tornado just to the Northwest in Michigan.

All in all from RC to food to billeting the Sarnia group did a great job!

Master's Sailing in the North American Region

What is Master's sailing?

Master's sailing is for "seasoned" sailors - only those that have reached their 35th birthday by the start of the regatta.GGM Deidre Webster It is still the competitive racing that you remember, but recognizes that while your mind is still young your body might not still be there anymore with the twenty-somethings. And just to keep the playing field level, Master's are broken into four age divisions: Apprentice (35-44 years old), Master (45-54 years old), Grand Master (55-64 years old) and Great Grand Master (65+). At the highly competitive but very fun World Championships you race against competitors only in your age division. In North America the Masters typically race as one fleet but score in their age divisions. An overall winner is also determined using a handicap system where Apprentices add 3 points to their finish position in each race, Masters 2 points and Grand Masters 1 point. The racing, both in age divisions and overall, is extremely close on the water. Off the water the emphasis is on having a great time with all of your fellow Masters sailing friends. If you have a Laser and are over 35 you need to be on the Master's Regatta circuit!!
