Laser and Radial Pacific Coast Championship: links to results and pictures...

The 2006 Laser and Radial Pacific Coast Championships were held July 22-24 at the Cabrillo Beach Yacht Club in San Pedro. This served as a feeder event for the Radial World Championship which begins this weekend.

Chuck Tripp provided the following recap:

We had the most unusual weather ever.  On Saturday we had great conditions.  15 knots.  Vann Wilson schooled us.  He had two wins and a 8th.  The 8th only because he was over the line.  At 214 and hiking strong, I don't see how anyone can beat him in a breeze.   On Sunday the wind shut down completely.  We actually sailed 3 races in 5 knots from 3 pm to 6:30.  Unbelievable.  I have never been so hot - 90 degrees - while sailing on the Pacific.  Anyway, Steve Hochart who grew up in Mission Bay and now lives in Hawaii and sails with John Myrdal had a great day and took over the lead.  With 6 races in, they now had a series and one throw out.   We had an incredible Lightning storm on Sunday night.  Lightning strikes set fires on Catalina.  Anyway Monday looked promising with wind from the right direction early in the morning but fog came in.  We were held at the dock for an hour until it lifted and headed out.  The wind dropped to nothing again and we sat around until 2:30 and the race committee abandoned.  Steve Hochart won the full rigs.  A girl from England won the female radials and Adam Deermount won the mens radials.  The women and men raced together but were scored separately.

Cabrillo Beach Yacht Club did an incredible job. The competitors had the continental breakfast and two dinners which were by far the best I have ever had at a regatta.   We had fruit, power bars, water, etc.... on the race course.  They had a great dolly crew and moved alot of boats in the boatyard to accomodate us.  Their race committee made all the right decisions and got a fair regatta in with very challenging conditions.
